Kampala - Day 2

Had a lie in this morning until 9am - phoned Bert who kindly dropped of a spare mountain bike for tomorrows marathon cycle lol!

Here is a picture of Annabel walking up to the bus, sorry taxi stop followed by the taxi arriving.

Squashed in like sardines we headed back into Kampala. There are no bus stops they just toot their horns if they think somebody needs a lift. This process continues until bus is overloaded. It is only at this point they carry on with purpose to centre of town.

There was one little girl who kept turning round to smile at us - don't think she had seen 2 muzumgu's (white folk) with red hair and leopard (freckle) spots before!

We headed to Owino market which sells everything you can think of but under foot can be a bit tricky. Picture below leaving market.

From the market we headed for a taxi rank to take us to the Parliament passing a bicycle repair centre - see below:

Not far from taxi rank now....

Now which taxi do we get?????

We somehow managed to find a taxi and headed to the Parliament - there are actually 2 Parliaments and if I picked it up right they only sit in this one about 3 times a year.

From the parliament we headed down a street called 'The Royal Mile' ..... sound familiar to folk back in Scotland?  ...and headed to Mengo Palace on a boda...again. It was hot and a fair walk.

Within the Palace grounds our tour guide took us to Idi Amins torture chamber. It was originally used as weapon storage but when Mr Amin came to power he apparantly used it for another purpose - the cave was filled with water up to ankle height, then electrified followed by the prisoners being pushed in, according to the guide at the Palace. A very sad place.

As we wandered back to the main entrance there was a burnt out car sitting on top of another one. The guide said it was a Bentley on top of a Cadillac but I thought it looked like a Daimler but Im no car expert. See for yourself below - should have had a top gear expert here!

As we headed for another taxi to take us back into town and back to Javas for an early dinner we came across this tree with big lumps of fruit on it -apparantly this is called 'Jack Fruit'  - I will interested to what 'Jill Fruit' looks like.

We headed back into Kampala towards Javas and met up with Annabel's other Vol friends before heading back to villa for a well earned rest on another boda - if we didnt it was going to add another hour to our journey. Caved in again.
